A research team led by University of Waterloo professor Amir Khajepour has built DeltaBot, a parallel-arm robot that uses cables for arms instead of rigid components and has a cylinder in the middle to keep the cables in tension. The researchers say DeltaBot's design makes it extremely fast, accurate, and strong.
DeltaBot can handle large compressive forces and uses an overhead mount system, which saves floor space in crowded warehouses. Khajepour says the robot could be used in industries, such as auto parts plants, that normally require larger robots bolted to the factory floor. He also notes that the DeltaBot design is relatively simple, making it easy to fix in-house.
