U.s. One Step Closer to Cyber Guards For Nation's Electric Grid

View as: Print Mobile App Share:

The bidding for a National Electric Sector Cyber Security Organization that would shield the U.S. electrical grid from cyberattacks was officially opened up by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The agency stressed the need for an independent entity to supply executive leadership to enable research, development, and implementation priorities; recognize and disseminate best cybersecurity practices; structure the collation, analysis, surveillance, and dissemination of infrastructure weaknesses and threats; and augment grid cybersecurity including control and information technology systems.

Among the key challenges that such an organization could help tackle would be generating an environment that promotes information sharing about real-world, cross-sector attacks, and devising and deploying wire encryption technology to safeguard communication connections. Other major challenges include maintaining funding and employment of the National SCADA Test Bed; creating legacy system security solutions; and identifying best practices for linking legacy systems to business networks as well as effective gateway security instruments.
