A shortfall of cybersecurity professionals is on the horizon, with Boeing's Alan Greenberg warning that the U.S. public and private sectors will collectively need roughly 60,000 such employees in the next three years. Satisfying demand for cybersecurity workers is all the more critical in view of the continued escalation of cyberattacks from organized hackers against U.S. companies' computer networks. The U.S. Homeland Security Department estimates that about 85 percent of critical U.S. infrastructure is controlled by the private sector, which means that national security is intertwined with private companies' ability to safeguard their digital networks.

California State Polytechnic University and other universities are holding cyberdefense contests to help companies enlist students who can fortify their defenses against cyberattacks. Large salaries for Internet security professionals is an additional incentive.

Government and industry officials said the theft of intellectual property from hacking can damage the U.S. economy at a recent Stanford University security conference.
