Commerce Department Scrutinizes Internet Privacy

View as: Print Mobile App Share:

The U.S. Commerce Department is creating an Internet Policy Task Force consisting of staff members from the National Telecommunications and Information Agency, the International Trade Administration, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Patent & Trademark Office to examine policy frameworks and ways in which the "challenges of the new Internet economy and society" can be addressed while simultaneously preserving and improving the protection of users' privacy. Commerce also will hold a meeting on May 7 to discuss privacy policies with representatives from the private sector as well as the general public.

The initiative also includes a comment period in which members of the commercial sector, individual citizens, academics, and others can express their views on current privacy laws around the world.

Sources say the initiative aims to determine what is happening in the intersection of "privacy and innovation on the Internet" to provide the White House with guidance on setting privacy policy.
