Submissions Invited For Green500 Supercomputer Ranking
The next submission deadline for the Green500 List, which ranks the most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world, will be June 7.
Institutions are asked to report their actual power numbers, whether during a performance-oriented or efficiency-oriented run of the Linpack benchmark.
The seventh edition of the Green500 List will be released in June, says Green500 co-founder Wu Feng, an associate professor with the Virginia Tech College of Engineering's computer science and electrical and computer engineering departments.
"We're asking supercomputer operators and institutions around the world to submit their measured performance and power information for their supercomputers," Feng says. "This is to ensure that the list is as accurate as possible."
The Green500 has ranked the energy efficiency of the world's 500 fastest performing supercomputers since its conception in late 2005 and its formal debut in 2007. The list serves as a complement to the TOP500, providing a foundation for tracking trends in green supercomputing, Feng says.
The sixth edition, from November 2009, showed a continuing improvement in energy efficiency among the world's fastest supercomputers. The Green500 List is released twice a year in June and in November.
The past focus of performance-at-any-cost supercomputing led to supercomputers that consume vast amounts of electrical power, Feng says. The Green500 highlights those supercomputers that place a high premium on energy-efficient performance for sustainable supercomputing without jettisoning performance.
