The Coming Data Explosion

The Internet is facing an explosion of data as more and more devices are connected to the Internet. Already, the growth rate of data on the Web is outpacing Moore's Law, according to Hewlett-Packard (HP) Labs' Parthasarathy Ranganathan.
Google's Marrisa Mayer says user-generated Web content has increased 15-fold over the past few years. She notes that there were five exabytes of data online in 2002, but that had risen to 281 exabytes in 2009, a growth rate of 56x over seven years. Mayer says the average person uploaded 15 times more data in 2009 than they did in 2006.
HP CEO Mark Hurd says that more data will be created in the next four years than in the history of the planet.
Ranganathan says the rise of ubiquitous nanosensors, which can have multiple dimensions per sensor, will generate another wave of data.
