Beyond the Petaflop: DARPA Wants Quintillion-Speed Computers

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced an initiative to realize a quintillion-calculationers-per second computer, an advancement necessary to "meet the relentlessly increasing demands for greater performance, higher energy efficiency, ease of programmability, system dependability and security."

The specific goals of the Omnipresent High Performance Computing systems project include the provision of hardware, software, and algorithms for reducing and managing power requirements for high performance computing systems. The initiative also calls for enhanced hardware and software to fortify system dependability, managing the component failure rate, and security compromises; self-aware system software; and scalable [input/output] systems.

The extreme scale computing systems are a component of DARPA's Ubiquitous High Performance Computing program, which seeks the development of low-energy architectures and protocols for logic, memory, data access, and data transport. DARPA also wants to create reliable computer systems that prioritize resiliency and security at all system levels.
