The U.S. Commerce Department's Internet Policy Task Force has issued a formal notice of inquiry seeking comments from the private sector and academia about the cybersecurity challenges they face as well as the possible strategies that could be used to promote best practices. Any comments received by Sept. 13 will be used in a report on the cybersecurity challenges companies and consumers face outside the critical infrastructure, which will be given to the White House and could influence domestic and international cybersecurity policies. However, the comments will not be used by the Obama administration to develop a new cybersecurity strategy for either the public or private sectors, says the Department of Homeland Security's Philip Reitinger. Instead, he says the administration will work to build on the progress that has already been made in improving cybersecurity through improved education, the use of best practices, and the adoption of regulations.

"We are a diverse [set of] communities; but together we can make substantive changes to identify threats, remediate those threats, [and] develop the next generation of technologies that takes [those threats] into account," says White House cybercoordinator Howard Schmidt.
