It Industry Working Toward Energy Efficiency, Report Finds
The information technology (IT) industry is on track to achieve the Climate Savers Computing Initiative's (CSCI's) goal of reducing annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 54 million metric tons by June 2011. A new CSCI report says the IT sector has reduced CO2 emissions from IT equipment by more than 32 million metric tons worldwide since 2007, which is the equivalent to more than $2 billion in annual energy savings.
CSCI, a global industry coalition formed in 2007 to reduce the environmental impact of new and emerging IT equipment through energy efficiency, says it also will focus on commercial and home networking systems and devices, and will work with members and other groups to set new energy-efficient criteria for the technologies.
CSCI wants to reduce annual CO2 emissions for commercial and residential routers and switches, commercial wireless local area networks, and security and access devices by an additional 38 million metric tons by 2015. The reduction would be the equivalent to $5 billion in annual energy cost savings.
