Combining emerging technologies such as dynamic language platforms, cloud computing, and agile development practices has led to a new paradigm for software development, writes ISO managing architect Nigel DeFreitas.
Today, many open source libraries and frameworks are being assembled into whole platforms, including the OpenStack and OpenNebula projects. Additionally, hardware appliances have emerged to take over common functions such as SQL engines, DOM parsers, and JVM runtimes.
In the future, DeFreitas predicts that platform-as-a-service solutions will provide all the tools now available in application servers and frameworks, such as messaging and transaction management. He also says that application management tools will provide auto-deploy features that give the latest change sets to cloud-based staging environments and dashboards will link the change sets back to user stories. Specifications such as Service Component Architecture will be important for developers when designing atomic reusable components.
