Heady Days of Nanotech Funding Behind It, the .s. Faces Big Challenges

Despite the U.S.'s lead in patenting nanotechnology inventions, it has not been able to translate that success into the marketplace, which has enabled countries such as China and Russia to challenge the United States for nanotechnology supremacy, according to a Lux Research report. Lux studied 19 countries competing in the nanotechnology field and ranked their ability to innovate as well as commercialize those inventions. The United States led in terms of government funding, corporate spending, venture capital investment, and patent issuances, with 2,378.
China did not fare as well in terms of obtaining patents for its inventions but produced 13,049 nanotech-related publications, compared to 11,818 from U.S.-based researchers. The report says that one reason for this is that the United States is not producing as many science and engineering graduates relative to its overall population as other countries, including China.
Japan, Germany, and South Korea all surpassed the United States in commercializing nanotechnology and products, the report says.
