Commissioner Kroes Wants to Include Developing Countries in Internet Governance
European Union (EU) digital agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes, speaking at the recent Internet Governance Forum, argued in favor of ensuring that countries with emerging economies have more say in Internet governance since they will soon have more Internet users than the United States and the EU combined. "Public authorities across the world must now be able, on an equal footing, to effectively carry out their roles and responsibilities when international public policy issues are at stake," Kroes says. She notes that ICANN is now reviewing its working methods to include more representatives from the developing world in advisory committees.
However, Kroes also criticizes the lack of transparency that has shrouded the nomination and functioning of the advisory committees, leading her to call for "enhanced cooperation . . . beyond just another round of consultations."
Additionally, Kroes says that it is "of utmost importance" that all Internet users now have the option to use scripts of their language for domain names.
