Michigan Researchers Develop Rfid-Based Sensors to Measure Physical Activity

Michigan State University (MSU) researchers have developed a system using RFID-enabled sensors to track the movements of different body parts as well as their angle and proximity to each other. The system includes an RFID tag attached to a user's upper arm, another on a wrist, and a third on an ankle. Each tag communicates with the other two, enabling the system to calculate the amount of movement and angle of a person's limbs.

The system's software can compute the amount of energy being expended by detecting the movement of the tags and their relationship to each other. The researchers say that data regarding the amount of energy expended could be useful to physicians, and unusual activity could prompt the system to send an alert.

The software can provide "a big picture to compute the amount of metabolic energy being expended," says MSU professor Subir Biswas.
