A nerd walks into an engineering building dedication...

OK, I'm not saying that the panel discussion Tuesday to celebrate Stanford University's new engineering center was exactly Comedy Central or anything, but I've got to hand it to the geniuses on stage: They delivered some pretty good lines.

It's not like they had the best material. Stanford President John Hennessy, engineering Dean Jim Plummer, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang and Nvidia co-founder Jen-Hsun Huang gathered to kick around "Technology Innovation in the 21st Century" for an hour and a half.

Huang was in the heady, or awkward, position of sitting in the auditorium of a gleaming, new 130,000-square-foot building named the Jen-Hsun Huang Engineering Center. And no, it wasn't a coincidence. He donated $30 million to the effort. The Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki Environment and Energy Building, named for Yang and his wife, is next door. (Also not a coincidence.)
