What Does Jobs' Absence Mean For the Future of Apple?
Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who has battled cancer and undergone a liver transplant, announced Monday he will take another medical leave of absence.

With Steve Jobs' third medical-related absence in six years, Silicon Valley must again confront one of its great mysteries: How much does Jobs matter to Apple?
The answer, based on Apple's posture, appears contradictory.
On one hand, Apple mythology would have us believe that Jobs is Apple. Not only is he the co-founder, but he also returned from the wilderness to resurrect Apple's fortunes and launch a series of innovative products that made it the most valuable technology company in the world.
On the other hand, the company offers only the most modest of details about his condition, arguing that his health is a private matter that shouldn't be of concern to investors. And indeed, the company can point to the fact that when he filled in last time, Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer, kept the company rolling along.
