Reuse, recycle, repurpose, renewables. This past Earth Day, we heard a lot about these concepts. As important as they are, I've noticed one phrase missing from the vernacular: Power management. Fortunately, there are very simple ways that all of us can use power management.
A typical desktop PC wastes over half the energy delivered to it. In fact, some desktops still waste power when they are not in use. By turning on power management features, you can reduce up to 80 percent of the energy used by your home computer.
The longest journey begins with a single step: The easiest and most affordable thing to do is to simply turn off your computer when it's not in use. For a small business that uses 500 desktop computers, that translates to a savings of $30,000 and more than 120,000 kWh per year.
