Take IT Out of the IT Department

It's time to reverse the trend of centralized information technology that has been the hallmark of most companies for at least 10 years. Control of IT shouldn't rest with the IT staff.
Overall, the enterprise era of centralized decision making has been a good thing. Businesses have made significant progress in streamlining processes and improving the management of IT-associated costs and risks. But for both competitive and technological reasons, funneling everything through the IT department no longer makes sense. Instead, business-unit leaders need to start assuming more control over the IT assets that fuel their individual businesses.
The costs of enterprise IT are starting to outweigh the benefits. Centralized decision making can be plodding and risk-averse — the kiss of death in our increasingly competitive world. Non-technical professionals entering the work force are ready — and willing — to play a more active role in managing IT. It's time for innovative IT.
