Academics Should Not Remain Silent on Hacking
Aside from a few isolated shouts of protest, the academic community has largely been silent about revelation that U.S. and British spy agencies have systematically — and successfully — attempted to undermine the work of the world's universities, computer scientists, and mathematicians who've spent their careers trying to develop secure systems.
That's disappointing. Academia is where we expect to hear the free flow of ideas and opinions. Don't academics also see the threat to open expression, and to the flow of dissident ideas from countries where people might fear that their communications are being tapped and, even if encrypted, cracked?
