Desperately Seeking the Nobel Prize For Computer Science

With all due respect to the Nobel Prize alumni, you could be forgiven for being so flippant as to think the research honored most years means so little to so many. Every October we are entertained by a massive build up to these announcements, and the laureates are treated like gods, but we mortals can be left wondering, 'what's it all about?'

What about practical innovations like mobile phones, pocket computers, and the Internet? Year after year I miss that one, clear-cut prize awarded . . . "for computing" in the category of computer science.
