Don't Fear the Terminator
As we teeter on the brink of the artificial intelligence revolution, worry is growing that the intelligence of machines will soon match or even exceed that of humans. They could turn against us and replace us as the dominant "life" form on earth. Our creations would become our overlords—or perhaps wipe us out altogether. Such dramatic scenarios, exciting though they might be to imagine, reflect a misunderstanding of AI. And they distract from the more mundane but far more likely risks posed by the technology in the near future, as well as from its most exciting benefits.
