The $787 billion U.S. economic stimulus package includes $2.5 billion in additional funding for the National Science Foundation and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education programs, but federal spending is unlikely to solve the country's STEM education crisis, according to Jena Baker McNeill (pictured) and Dan Lips of The Heritage Foundation. What is needed instead is "a major transformation in this country's approach to education, beginning at the state and local level."
