Oh no Mark Zuckerberg wants to build a metaverse

An immersive metaverse could supercharge the misinformation, surveillance, and harassment that's already rampant on social networks, while Facebook's data harvesting may become vastly more intrusive.

Imagine living in a virtual space that merges the physical and digital worlds—and is built by Facebook. It may sound like the stuff of nightmares, but Mark Zuckerberg hopes to make it a reality: the 37-year-old billionaire wants to build a metaverse.

Facebook's track record leaves open a lot of questions about privacy protection and advertising in the metaverse, and while Zuckerberg says he wants it to be an interoperable and open system that's run by multiple companies and creators, Facebook's history of buying rivals and stifling competition raises skepticism about those claims.

Even if the virtual space is operated collaboratively, how will it be governed? Tech firms aren't generally fans of external regulation.
