No Perfect Solution in Apple's Privacy vs. Child Safety Debate

It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see how governments around the world will seek to exploit the new surveillance capabilities that Apple is planning to build.

While the weeks since Apple's announcement have been full of well-founded criticism, they've been short on solutions. The status quo, both sides agree, is intolerable.

In an interview, Sharon Bradford Franklin discusses a letter, co-authored by her organization, that was sent to Apple CEO Tim Cook. It argues that Apple's updates could put vulnerable youths, particularly LGBTQ+ youths, at risk and that the company is walking a slippery slope toward expanded government surveillance.
