Meta's Message Encryption Was Built to Fail

Meta, like so many other tech firms, keeps saying it wants to protect users. The question is whether we should believe words or actions.

It is cheap and effortless for law enforcement to commandeer our Facebook files and use them against us. In a recent case in Nebraska, police demanded records of an intimate Facebook conversation between a girl and her mother in the days surrounding an alleged abortion. The data was cited as evidence to obtain a warrant and search the girl's home.

In the aftermath of the Dobbs decision, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised employees that the company would use encryption to "keep people safe." But the reality is that it does nothing of the sort.
