Academic Publishers Are Missing the Point on ChatGPT

The proliferation of powerful artificial intelligene (AI) tools pushes us to ask fundamental questions about how we perceive the role of scientists in general and the specific role writing plays in their work. In other words, to what degree should we even care that authors write every word of their research in the first place?

At least in the STEM context, the writing process is a means to an end of conveying important findings in a manner that is clear and coherent. If we can do that faster and cheaper, then maybe we should pause to consider the potential benefits. Would we have held up lifesaving COVID-19 research because the PI got help from an AI tool?
