David Foote, CEO of information technology (IT) workforce analyst firm Foote Partners, says that U.S. government statistics on IT employment are misleading. The problem derives from the Labor Department's classification system which still defines IT much the same as when IT know-how was found in pure-technology MIS departments — with administrators, engineers, programmers, developers, analysts, and so forth.
But the Labor Department does not track 16 million other U.S. workers outside the walls of the traditional IT department, from administrative to executive levels, who bring various blends of IT skills, subject matter expertise and business savvy to their jobs.
