For nearly a decade, Ladar Levison ran Lavabit, a secure e-mail service that served as an alternative for a tech-savvy crowd that cared about privacy. Then, last July, after two months of haggling with the F.B.I., Levison shuttered the service rather than give the government untrammeled access to his users' communications and everything he had built.

In a video interview, Levison discusses how he has become a symbol in the backlash against government spying, as well as the impact of the ordeal on his personal life.
