"We thought that we could take the five-minute conversation and replace it with one quick email message, but the reality is . . . 15 back-and-forth email messages," says Georgetown's Cal Newport.

Cal Newport, a computer science professor at Georgetown University, argues that our grandkids are going to look back at the way we work today in bewilderment. Specifically, they will be mystified by our addiction to email. This moment in workplace history is one where we all frantically check our inboxes every few minutes, exhausted by the deluge of complex and ambiguous messages while applauding ourselves for eliminating the need to speak face-to-face. He has some thoughts about how we got here and how we might do it better.
