Colin Garvey: A Zen Buddhist Monk's Approach to Democratizing AI
"This all-good or all-bad way of framing the subject [of AI] . . . is not a good way to think about complex problems," says Stanford research fellow Colin Garvey.
Colin Garvey, a postdoctoral research fellow with Stanford University's Institute for Human-centered Artificial Intelligence, took an unusual path to his studies in the social science of technology. After graduating from college, he taught English in Japan for four years, during which time he also became a Zen Buddhist monk. In 2014, he returned to the U.S., where he entered a Ph.D. program in science and technology studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Garvey is preparing a policy report on AI-risk governance for a Washington, D.C.-based think tank. In an interview, he discusses the need to change how we think and talk about AI and the importance of democratizing AI in a meaningful way.
