AI scholar Kate Crawford explores the history of artificial intelligence and its impact on the physical world in her new book, Atlas of AI (Yale University Press, 2021). Each chapter seeks to stretch understanding of the technology by unveiling how narrowly it's been viewed and defined.

Grounding her analysis in physical investigations, Crawford provides close-up, vivid descriptions of the earth and labor AI is built upon, and the deeply problematic histories behind it.

In an interview, Crawford describes how AI systems produce profound geomorphic changes, increase labor inequality, and create the need for a deeper democratic conversation.
