Expectations are high for geneticist Eric Lander, who was sworn in on June 2 as director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). In a first for any U.S. president, Joe Biden elevated the position of OSTP director to his cabinet, potentially granting Lander more access and influence than any science adviser before him.

In an interview, Lander discusss his goals for the OSTP, criticisms of him, and some of the weighty priorities that Biden has tasked him with.
