Craig Barrett joined Intel Corp. as a technology-development manager in 1974, and rose through the ranks to become chief executive officer in 1998. In 2005, he stepped down from Intel's executive team and became chairman of the board. Barrett, 69, is retiring as chairman on May 20 amid a severe semiconductor slump that has seen companies slashing jobs and scaling back production to boost their bottom lines. He recently spoke about Intel's strategy, the tech industry, and economic competitiveness.
