For the past decade, Samantha John has been helping kids learn to code with Hopscotch, an app she co-founded, which teaches programming to children as they create their own games. However, John did not grow up coding herself. In an interview, she shares her path from avoiding computer games to helping kids make them.

"Since I was a kid, I had this sense that I always liked videogames, but I thought, 'This is not appropriate for you, Samantha,'" she said. "'Video games are for boys. Don't let anyone see you playing video games.'"
